This is the first weekend A. and I have been home, together, in over a month. We decided we’d ‘play it by ear.’ I knew I wanted to hang out with her and stay close to home, as I’ve been super busy with work lately. We made plans to go to a movie, but when the day started out with a morning trip to the farm to pick tomatoes, herbs, and flowers, we ended up home, getting a jump start on our canning.
The heat and humidity today was a sore reminder that fall is more than a month away. I am ready for the crisp fall weather to enter. In that spirit, I started in on my first canning project of the season and also made a red and a green salsa. It was over 90 degrees out so the AC was on, and my use of the gas stove all day sure made the AC work over time. You can see many pictures on Flickr, and here are a few:

Wow– how gorgeous are those tomatillos! Every year I think I’m going to grow them and never do.
I wish I were there learning to can from you. Another thing I always think I’m going to do and still haven’t. At least this year I’m putting some stuff back in the freezer for Winter.

Indymel- really all you need to get started is the Ball book of Preserving, a canning pot, rack, & tongs, and some Ball canning jars. i started slowly and each year ramp up my production.
CD & SP – yes we do need to plan a get together soon! hey, since you mentioned you’re also canning, what are the chances you’ve ever pickled cabbage to make sour kraut? i am looking for someone to try this out with this year as we get gobs and gobs of cabbage!

hmmm…a good polack *should* know how to make some saurkraut, but no. I’ve never tried it. We did pickle chips, spears and wholes recently that were great and soooo easy though. And my dad did some cucumber relish that looks pretty good. Let us know when you do it, perhaps we’ll come and all learn together.
